Young I.E. talent

Since summer ended the inland empire art scene has died down, unfortunately.
I thought i would display the works of some younger I.E. talent.

Divas- Photography Exhibit @ CSUSB

"SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.-The photographers in the exhibition might consider themselves divas, or perhaps it is their subjects that are the divas. Or, with its aloof and unflinching gaze, perhaps it's the medium itself.

It's all open to interpretation and the choice is yours in "DIVAS: A Group Exhibition of Immodest Photography" at the Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum at Cal State San Bernardino. The exhibit runs Sept. 25-Dec. 13. A reception for the artists will be held on Thursday, Oct. 4, from 3-5 p.m.

The exhibition includes the work of 37 photographers from around the country. One each from Indiana, Colorado, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, one who lists Pennsylvania and New York as his home states, nine others from New York and 23 from California."

Dear Bijma's I.E. viewers,
I have taken the liberty to research the photographers exhibiting photographs at CSUSB's Divas show. I haven't been able to find photographs that will be used in the show, but i have found an ample amount of photographs from a few of the 37 photographers to give you a better idea of what to expect.

I don't find the concept behind the show very appealing. I don't believe 37 photographers could assemble a cohesive show about immodesty especially one called "divas". If I were to curate the same show using photographs I liked from the list of photographers, then this is what my show would look like. Enjoy this miniature art show!

ARTUR ŻMIJEWSKI @ Narrowcast

AARTUR ŻMIJEWSKI's video "The Game Of Tag" will be shown at Pitzer Art Gallery's Narrowcast. The show opens September 25th. I can't wait. Here is a description of Artur's video i would like to share with you.

"The strategy most frequently used by Zmijewski is to arrange situations and look, how the protagonists would behave. That is why his video works often remind fictionalised documentaries. BEREK / The Game of Tag, 1999 (illustrations) is one of the best examples. Zmijewski filmed a group of people in two rooms: a symbolically neutral space and the gas chamber of a former Nazi death camp. Naked men and women of various ages play the game of tag - some of them are ashamed, others engage in the game. According to the artist, this film is an example of a kind of therapy, used in psychology: the re-enactment of a traumatic event with a simultaneous shifting of its meaning."

Dear Bijma's I.E viewers,
Since I found out Bill Viola was going to be a part of Pitzer Art Gallery's Narrowcast, I haven't been able to get enough of him. Here is an interview of Bill at the Venice Biennial 2007. He talks about African poet Birago Diop, the lack of concern American's have for traditions, and death.

Diane Bush @ UCR Museum of Photography

Dear Bijma's I.E. viewers,

Diane Bush will be a part of a group exhibition named Micro Macro at the UCR Museum of Photography. The exhibition concerns depth and perspective of photographs and the different messages that come from manipulating them. While other photographers in the show simply photographed landscapes at short and far distances, Diane Bush's photographs yell out a message that is undeniable. She will be exhibiting photographs she has taken of news programs aired during the gulf war.
"sitting on my knees in front of the television, for each day of the war, I "documented" the war through the eyes of the public…only being able to see the faces of war correspondents and commentators, because no media (no "embedded" journalists) were allowed "on the front"."
These photographs express the eerie, hollow, and frightening feelings we receive by watching the news. We, as a society, are still dealing with the deceitfulness of news so i believe Diane's work is still relevant to what we are experiencing today. These photographs make me angry and inspire me. I hope they do the same for you.

Dear Bijma I.E. viewers,

Here are some photographs by Amanda Martin. I divided them up into two series. The first is playful and innocent. The second is inspirational and silly. All adjectives i would use to describe Amanda as well. Enjoy!

Bill Viola's Anthem

Since Bill's Work will be shown at the pitzer college gallery, i thought i would give Bijma's I.E. viewers an idea of what their in for. This video will not be shown, but i believe it gives one a general idea of what Bill's work is like.

Bill Viola's Anthem:
http://www.ubu.com/film/viola.html

These are images, "all centered on the theme of primitive fear of the dark, materialism and the harmful separation of body and mind" (Bill Viola).

"The child's cry reflects the rumbling of the town, the flaming factory chimneys, a surgical operation, a torn living body from which flesh is being removed, revealing the heart beating vigorously. This cry, which functions as eyes, crystallizes and dismembers the flesh of the image, removing it to a terrifying twilight world. "
